I got back from Holiday Inn (at Clark, Pampanga) yesterday. But I was too tired to log in. So…I slept. Well whatever. I wasn’t able to stay in touch because the computer rental inside the hotel was so expensive. It was my first 10-day stay at a 5 star hotel! *sigh* It’s good to be back. But that means I have to catch up to so many quizzes, seat works, activities and assignments at school, so please, wish me luck.

A few months ago, the Department of Agriculture enacted an Administrative Order which allowed for the INHUMANE “tambucho-gassing method” of dogs (and even cats); a procedure that starts with seven to ten dogs stuffed in a metal box that has a tube connected to a vehicle’s exhaust pipe (tambucho) which is revved continuously for 10 to 15 minutes, emitting poisonous fumes till the animals die a slow, and painful death.

There are approximately 200 unclaimed stray dogs that need to be put down in a regular city pound. With about 138 Philippine cities, that’s roughly 27,600 dogs that need to be euthanized every month.. The tambucho killing method was regarded as an economical way of putting down these helpless animals and it was being adopted all throughout the country.

The Committee on Animal Welfare (CAW) allowed for the inclusion of “tambucho killing” on the Administrative Order (AO) on Euthanasia of Animals which was approved by the Department of Agriculture last June. The AO states that this is an accepted and legal method of euthanasia.

But because of efforts by the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) and Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA) along with citizens who showed their support especially through social networks and blogs, the Committee on Animal Welfare (CAW) reviewed and DELETED TAMBUCHO-GASSING FROM ADMINISTRATIVE ORDER 13!

The Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Alcala heeded public outcry and referred the controversial AO back to the CAW for reconsideration. Out of the 9 individuals who voted, 5 voted yes for the deletion of the cruel tambucho-gassing method (i.e. removal of Section of 6.2a on “Carbon Monoxide” and fourth item in the second column of the third row of the Table on AGENT AND METHODS OF EUTHANASIA BY SPECIES – referring to “carbon monoxide from a car exhaust using gasoline engine”).
This leaves the following methods as the only legal methods of euthanasia for the category “Cats and Dogs” under AO 13: “barbiturates, inhalant anesthetics, carbon dioxide in cylinder, potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate in conjunction with general anesthetics and gunshot.”

This is one victory for the furry kind, but one great leap for humanity and being kind.

Sabihin niyo kung paranoid lang ako o bitter o whatever ha.

Hindi ko binuksan yung facebook ko for 5 months. it’s not like may pakealam naman ang madlang sanlikha pero anyway, napilitan ako dahil sa isang service na kinailangan ko online (mahabang istorya kaya kungwari naisipan ko nalang magonline bigla) tapos, naghanap ng kaibigan, nakita ko yung status ni Phoncy (yung isang batchmate ko from another section) tapos nagcomment ako. Bigla nalang nakita ko, nag comment pala si “Cicero” dun sa status niya about organic chem. So, nawindang ako’t tinry siya i-chat dahil magiisang taon na din since nagkita kami ng “childhood friend” ko. Tapos sabi ko, “Ui long time no see.” Leech, nag online! Leech. Ansakit nu’n alam mo ba? yung, yung nagipon ka ng lakas ng loob na bumati tapos, tapos, tapos gaganunin ka?!

Happy birthday nga pala Josh. At hi din sa mga kaibigan kong sina Baron, Earl, Duke at T-Bone. Mga alaga ko nga pala yan…
